Flavors of Oakland: A Cookbook in 20 Stories

I authored and co-created Flavors of Oakland: A Cookbook in 20 Stories. The 190-page hardcover book tells the stories of 20 residents in Oakland, California—mostly home cooks. Each of the 20 chapters shares the story of an Oakland resident along with a treasured recipe from their culture. To create the book, I and co-creator Anya Ku (photographer) immersed ourselves in the lives of each of these 20 people for a day.  The book is a local bestseller and copies have been given free of charge to all Oakland Public Schools and interested youth organizations.

“We have much to learn from young people like Elazar! Their instincts to celebrate beautiful meals cooked at home and eaten together with family and friends fills me with hope.” —Alice Waters
